Summit Knit-a-Long: Session I

Summit Shawl

Summit Shawl in Milky Whey

Anyone who’s seen me knitting in the last couple of months has probably seen me working on Summit, a fabulous pattern by Mandie Harrington, available as a free download on knitty.com. I’m knitting mine in Milky Whey, the super soft milk and soy yarn from Kollage.

It’s really fun to knit – and pretty easy! However, there are a few construction details that are out of the regular realm of knitting. Not so much an issue of difficulty, and more an issue of “can she really mean that?” So, we’re having a knit-a-long for a scarf version (easily adapted!). If anyone wants to make the shawl version during the knit-a-long, that’s fine too!

We have scheduled four sessions for the knit-a-long (July 7, 10, 14, 17). You can come to all of them, or any of them. Anyone getting started at each session will be guided through the scarf/shawl cast on/set up (I told you it’s a bit out of the box). Those already in progress will be encouraged and helped as needed.

What you need for class:

  • a copy of the pattern (download free Summit pattern here) [we are unable to provide you with a pattern per Knitty.com's rules. It's a very cool online knitting magazine, and well worth the effort of viewing to download the pattern, which, did I mention, is free]
  • yarn: a nice sock, fingering, sport, or DK yarn is best. About 300-400 yards. I’ll be making my scarf from 1/2 N 1/2 from Kollage (50% milk, 50% wool). Of course you may choose a yarn from the lovely selection of yarns we have here at The Fine Needle, and we’re happy to help you choose the perfect one.
  • needles appropriately sized for the yarn (which means bring a range of sizes, US2-5, and we’ll determine which will work best!). Gauge isn’t crucial, but you want a pleasing result.

Cost: free!
