Make-it Monday: Fabric as Art

Quilters and sewers – and even those who don’t sew but appreciate a fine piece of fabric will like this project. Many of us have pieces of fabric in our stash that are “too lovely to cut up.” Unfortunately, these lovely fabrics remain hidden in our stashes, occasionally admired when we come across them while searching for something else.

This project will let that lovely piece of fabric become art – and still be usable should the need arise to incorporate it into a quilt or sewing project. Fabric, meet the stretcher frame.

Stretcher frames are used by artists to stretch canvas across and create the base for their paintings. Most art supply stores sell them paired in various lengths so you can create a custom sized rectangle or square. I happened to have an artist canvas lying around, so I just used that, but those are typically more expensive to buy. You could also use an old painting (not a Picasso or anything, but maybe something you found in the attic that late Aunt Phoebe painted). Remove from frame if it’s framed.

There are complete instructions on making your own fabric panel wall art on How About Orange‘s blog. A cool place to roam around if you have a few minutes.
